Caitríona Duggan: EUPIC Trial Launches to Transform Vascular Access in Oncology Care

Caitríona Duggan, PHD Candidate of Vascular access devices for systemic anti-cancer therapy at University of Galway, shared on LinkedIn:

EUPIC, a new nurse-led vascular access trial evaluating ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous catheter insertion by oncology nurses versus the traditional ‘touch and feel’ method for patients with difficult intravenous access receiving systemic anti-cancer treatment, opened to recruitment in Portiuncula University Hospital one week ago and will soon open in Galway University Hospital and Letterkenny University Hospital.

The study is being conducted across the HSE West North West, is run through the HRB Clinical Research Facility Galway – University of Galway, is sponsored by the Irish Cancer Society, the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) and the Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Services Director (ONMSD), and aims to generate high-quality Irish data on whether nurse-delivered ultrasound guidance can improve first-attempt success, reduce multiple cannulation attempts and enhance patient experience during cancer treatment.

This milestone has only been possible thanks to the incredible nursing staff and management team in Portiuncula University Hospital, whose sustained support for research, innovation in vascular access and compassionate cancer care has made this practice-changing study a reality, and with sincere thanks to my PhD supervisor, and Academic lead Peter Carr, and co-supervisor Orlaith Hernon from University of Galway for their expert guidance and mentorship throughout the development of this work.

Massive thank you to our PPI members for their invaluable input throughout the last few years, Jacqueline Daly and Onagh O’Grady.”
