Caitríona Duggan: Meeting President Michael D. Higgins – A Moment to Cherish for Oncology Nurses

Caitríona Duggan, PHD Candidate of Vascular access devices for systemic anti-cancer therapy at University of Galway, shared on LinkedIn:

“Some days are simply unforgettable. Today was one of those days.

Today, I had the immense honour of attending afternoon tea at Áras an Uachtaráin with President Michael D. Higgins and Mrs Sabina Higgins, alongside my colleagues from the Irish Association for Nurses in Oncology.

For a President known throughout his career for his intellectual depth, his commitment to social justice, and his dedication to the Irish language, it was profoundly moving to hear him speak in person. His words, delivered with such gentleness, focused on the moral courage needed in our world and the importance of how we approach our work.

As nurses, we bear witness to immense vulnerability and strength. To hear Ireland’s leading advocate for a more ethical and inclusive society validate the importance of this perspective, of looking at “what we can do and how we can do it best” – felt like a direct and meaningful endorsement of our profession

It’s a day I will always cherish – a reminder of the importance of our profession and the dignity we strive to bring to our patients.”
