City Cancer Challenge (C/Can) shared a post on LinkedIn:
“They first met in Abuja in 2025. Since then, they’ve been working together through a series of online sessions, building knowledge, exchanging experiences, and growing as leaders. Last week, they walked into ASCO 2026 in Chicago, one of the most important gatherings in oncology, where thousands of cancer professionals come together each year to share the research and discoveries that are shaping the future of cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. And they made their mark.
For participants of C/Can’s and ASCO’s Leadership Programme for Women in Oncology (LPWO), the week was built around learning. Through C/Can’s participation in the ASCO International Development and Education Award (IDEA) Scholars Program, they took part in two days of workshops alongside early-career oncology professionals from low- and middle-income countries, working through leadership, communication, and career development with ASCO facilitators and mentors. Each participant also had one-on-one mentoring sessions with senior oncology leaders.
Recognition came too. Dr Hannatu Ayuba received the Yvonne Award by OncoDaily for her work in community oncology, a well-deserved recognition of her impact and leadership. At the ASCO Opening Session, LPWO faculty member Dr Frank Ferris was honoured with the prestigious Walther Cancer Foundation Supportive Oncology Award, a proud moment for everyone connected to the programme.
The connections built across the week were no less significant. Participants joined the ASCO President’s Reception and the World Oncology Leaders Reunion, meeting colleagues and collaborators from across the globe. C/Can also participated in the Global Cancer Financing Platform Summit, strengthening ties with key stakeholders working to advance cancer care internationally.
The week closed with each participant presenting her individual project and receiving feedback from coaches and volunteers connected from around the world.
The next milestone: the formal presentation of the LPWO leaders’ projects. More to come!
We thank American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) for introducing transformative tools, professionals, and tailored programs that have fundamentally strengthened the leadership core of LPWO, and Roche for their continued support of the LPWO programme.”
