“Brussels set the tone. Patients set the direction. Action starts now.
In Brussels, at ‘From Risk to Action: Preventing liver health crises through NCD literacy and care’ hosted by MEP Nicholas Papandreou, we didn’t gather for another discussion – we faced a public health reality Europe can’t afford to ignore: liver disease, MASLD, MASH, liver cancer… are increasing, often silent, too often diagnosed late, yet largely preventable.
With powerful passion and real expertise, MEP Papandreou made the shift we urgently need: EU health policy must move beyond words – into action. Action built on stigma-free awareness that goes beyond lifestyle choices, early detection, and better coordinated care, especially for people living with comorbidities, so they are not the leading “doctor” in their own health journey. And the patient testimonies made it undeniable: behind every number is a human life – and time we can never get back.
Then Brussels became the beginning of something bigger.
After the event, we were officially invited to Piraeus, Athens, to take the liver screening initiative to Greece, together with the Piraeus Medical Association, and led by MEP Nikos Papandreou
Greece is becoming the first EU Member State to invite, host, and launch this extraordinary initiative with screening booths where people are bringing prevention and care closer to every citizen.
That is leadership. That is a partnership. That is Europe at its best.
No stigma. No delay. No more late diagnoses.
We bring the patient voice – strong, united, and impossible to ignore – because prevention only works when it reaches real people, in real places, in time – when patients’ organisations such as ELPA, doctors, and politicians such as MEP Papandreou work together!
Brussels sparked it. Piraeus will prove it. Europe must scale it.”
