“Twenty-five years ago, our city, our health system, and our nation were forever changed.
Since the weeks after 9/11, the Mount Sinai Health System has cared for the responders and survivors of that day.
Through our World Trade Center Health Program Clinical Center of Excellence, more than 25,000 have entrusted us with their care.
‘Each one is a person, a family, a story of resilience.’
Last week, we gathered with the partners, responders, survivors, and families who have shared this mission for 25 years. They included:
- Erica Schwartz, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC);
- the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund;
- our clinical and community partners, including the 9/11 Health Watch;
- first-responder organizations;
- elected officials such as former Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, former Congressman Peter King, and Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella, and video messages from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Congressman Andrew Garbarino.
The lesson we’ve learned is that recovery takes long-term partnership, science, and compassion.
Today, we remember those we lost, honor those still carrying that day’s weight, and thank our colleagues who have devoted their careers to this work.
