Bogda Koczwara: A Great Piece in The Conversation Australia + NZ on Financial Burden Based on a Canadian Study
Bogda Koczwara, Director of Australian Research Centre for Cancer Survivorship, shared on LinkedIn:
“A great piece in The Conversation Australia + NZ on financial burden (mostly driven by inability to work) based on a Canadian study (thanks for sharing Sue Woodall!
The bottom line:
- cancer diagnosis leads to significant, long term financial losses that can be long lasting
- younger individuals are disproportionally affected (more vulnerable work circumstances and limited financial reserves) but these issues are applicable to all adults of working age
These findings are not unique to Canada and have been reported in other developed countries – see our paper on global issues here – it is likely that they are just as concerning (if not more, given worse cancer outcomes and more insecure work) in emerging economies but less data available.
Solutions need to be multilevel:
- improving physical and emotional function of survivors,
- supporting access to rehabilitation
- financial/vocational advice
- supportive work environment and
- policy protections (financial, vocational and discrimination).
