Bishal Gyawali: Truth Is Not a Popularity Contest in Science and Medicine

Bishal Gyawali, Medical Oncologist and Professor at Queen’s University, shared on LinkedIn:

A periodic reminder.

My take-home message is if you are a trainee in oncology, an early career oncologist, an oncologist, or any physician or researcher, then please don’t chase this. This is not helpful. If you are a consumer of social media, please be aware of the celebrity effect. Just because someone famous says something does not make it true. Truth is not a popularity contest. Truth is truth even if no one believes it. Truth does not depend on who believes it and how many people believe it.

My message for the audience is don’t outsource critical thinking. Think for yourself. Just because someone important – a celebrity or a big shot – says something does not make it true. Thank you.”
