“I’m pleased to share this article published in The Rising Nepal, where I highlight a crucial healthcare initiative addressing cervical cancer in Madhes Province.
Cervical cancer is almost entirely preventable, yet it remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women in Nepal. In this piece, I look at how the global cancer non-profit Binaytara is tackling this in Janakpur by pairing HPV-based screening with trusted Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs).
We found women with secondary education were over 4 times more likely to be aware of cervical cancer, while those with decision-making autonomy showed far better understanding of screening benefits.
Binaytara is scaling up to screen 1000+ women while actively involving male volunteers to build household support. Preventable deaths shouldn’t happen due to systemic gaps. It’s time for policymakers to scale these proven community models nationwide.
