Bibek Aryal: How Can We Conquer Cancer if We Don’t Know How Many People Have It?

Bibek Aryal, Surgeon-Scientist, Independent Researcher in Cancer Outcomes, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“How can we conquer cancer if we don’t know how many people have it?

Precision oncology advances in high-income countries are exhilarating. Yet, millions of patients in low- and middle-income nations remain invisible—simply because cancer is not properly counted.

I am pleased to share that JAMA Oncology published my perspective (Viewpoint), arguing that cancer registries aren’t just technical tools—they’re a moral imperative for global health equity.

This piece draws on gaps I witnessed between data-rich systems in the US and the epidemiological silence in Nepal—a reality shared by many nations in the Global South.

This perspective further deepens my commitment to advocating for patients who remain invisible in our data.

Grateful to the editorial team at JAMA Oncology for amplifying the voices of the uncounted.”
