Bhabnath Kumar Jha։ Improving Early Detection of Childhood Cancer Through Community Awareness and Support

Bhabnath Kumar Jha, Program Head at Ramesh Gupta Memorial Trust, shared on LinkedIn:

“Last week was incredibly busy, meaningful and inspiring for our team.

On 7th July, we organized a Parent Support Group Program to better understand how families of children with cancer are supporting one another during their most difficult moments and to learn what additional help they need as they continue their journey.

Listening to their stories reminded us that behind every treatment plan is a family showing remarkable strength, hope and resilience.
We also conducted a Focus Group Discussion with Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs) to assess the impact of our training programs. Their feedback highlighted how community level awareness and early recognition can make a life changing difference for children and their families.

In addition, on 8th July, we successfully completed the final batch of FCHV training (in total 207 FCHVs) of Bharatpur Metropolitan City at BPKMCH, strengthening the network of frontline health workers who play a critical role in identifying warning signs and ensuring timely referrals.

On 10 July, we organized another EWSS (Early Warning Signs and Symptoms of Childhood Cancer) training program in the beautiful town of Bandipur, often called the ‘Queen of the Mountains‘ in Gandaki Province. More than 50 doctors and healthcare professionals from Tanahun, Gorkha and Lamjung districts participated in this important initiative.

These efforts are all part of our commitment to improving the early identification of childhood cancer. We are encouraged to see the impact reflected in the increasing number of children reaching hospitals at earlier stages, when treatment outcomes can be significantly improved. Every early diagnosis represents a child given a better chance, a family given hope and a future preserved.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ramesh Gupta Memorial Trust, World Child Cancer specially Samrat Rayamajhi and the entire team at BPKMCH for their unwavering support.

A special thank you to Dr Krishna Sagar Sharma for accepting this challenge and demonstrating extraordinary commitment to changing the lives of our little warriors.

We are also deeply grateful to Amgen for its generous support, which helps make these initiatives possible.

Together, we are building awareness, strengthening communities and creating a future where more children can be diagnosed early, treated effectively and given the opportunity to thrive.”
