“As a twelve-year Stage 3 colorectal cancer survivor and thriver, I will always advocate for colon cancer screening and funding for research to save lives. Earlier this month, I was in Washington DC with Fight Colorectal Cancer as part of their Call on Congress event to help our Senators and Representatives understand that funding for colon cancer research is VITAL. While colon cancer is now the #1 cancer killer of adults under age 50, it does not have its own dedicated funding like other major cancers including breast, prostate, kidney, and pancreas. This needs to change.
We put out more than 27,000 blue (the color of colon cancer) flags on the National Mall, representing the number of lives that can be saved from this disease by 2030 with proper research funding. It was a sobering sight.
March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and this is your reminder to listen to your body and if you are 45 or older and haven’t had a colonoscopy, get screened. Colonoscopies save lives…it did for me.”
