Benedikt Niedermaier, Visiting Research Fellow at DKFZ – German Cancer Research Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Excited to share our invited editorial in the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer’s Journal of Thoracic Oncology. We discuss a recent phase III trial by Wu et al. who investigated an active surveillance strategy for patients with multifocal ground-glass opacities, simultaneously published in the current issue of the journal.
Even though short-term survival outcomes seem to indicate that surveillance can be a safe strategy, the high likelihood of invasive cancer in GGOs is a reason for caution; especially as long-term results are pending.
There is a lot of work to be done to improve personalized care for lung cancer – either considering GGO from the perspective of radiology or lepidic growth from the perspective of histology. I am thankful to be involved in multiple ongoing clinical and translational projects within the Thoraxklinik and DZL to improve care for patients with premalignant and very early-stage lung cancer.”
