Belén Garijo: Three Days That Mattered for Spain, Germany, and Europe

Belén Garijo, Chair of the Executive Board and CEO of Merck, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Three days that mattered for Spain, Germany, and Europe.

Being part of German President Steinmeier’s historic official state visit to Spain was an honor I will never forget. Every step carried meaning:

  •  The Royal Palace welcome in Madrid and talks with King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Sánchez, plus cultural moments at the Reina Sofía.
  •  The German-Spanish Economic Forum, where business and industry leaders came together to deepen cooperation and reinforce Europe’s competitiveness, and
  •  The solemn tribute in Guernica, where President Steinmeier honored the victims of a German air raid that claimed hundreds of lives in 1937 and issued a passionate call to safeguard peace in Europe.

It was also an especially proud moment to welcome the President to our Merck Group biotech center in Tres Cantos.

We’ve been doing business in Spain for over 100 years. Our 1,300-strong Spanish team delivers meaningful impact for customers and patients across the country and the world every day. Thank you for helping make this visit unforgettable.

As a Spaniard leading a German-based science and technology company, this trip was deeply personal. I’m truly thrilled to have played a small role in strengthening the bond between these two great countries.

Yet, this visit was about something even more important – it sent a powerful signal to Brussels and to other member states across Europe. Germany and Spain are two of Europe’s strongest champions. With the momentum gained from this trip, they can put even more pressure on Europe to find its collective voice and lead.”
