Barbara Segarra-Vazquez, Professor at the University of Puerto Rico, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Today was another special day as an advocate. I volunteered a few months ago to help put together and moderate a panel of gyn-onco patients to talk to the participants of the LEAD program for the Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO). The audience was mentors and mentees. We had Caroline diagnosed at 28 with uterine leiomyosarcoma, Melissa diagnosed with endometrial cancer at 38, and Natalia 1st stage II and then Stage IV cervical cancer at 39. There was a special moment when Natalia shared a story of a doctor that said the most significant words to her when she went to MD Anderson for a consult when tge cancer spread. She said that the Dr. took her hand, looked her in the eyes and said:
‘I will take care of you the way I would if it was my mother, my sister or my wife’.
As she cried, she said how grateful she was for that moment and that the doctor was in the audience. We all could not believe it. Neither of them knew the other was going to be there. Moments like that are worth every second of hard work I do in my advocacy journey. All the panelists did an amazing job and the audience was engaged and asked great questions.”
