“An international genomics conference was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, recently, hosted by the Bangladesh Genomics Consortium and supported by Radiant Pharmaceuticals Limited. Dr Samreen Islam, the founder of the BGC and a UCL MSc graduate, underscored the importance of building a strong and responsible genomics ecosystem in Bangladesh, calling for collaboration among physicians, researchers, universities, hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, government institutions, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, technology partners, investors and other stakeholders.
With a mission to harmonise, support and transform healthcare using genomics for the diagnosis and treatment of complex diseases and advancing personalised medicine.The BGC, led by an international team of experts Mark Kristiansen ,Diego Marin, Teodora Popa, Oliver Rushton Nathan Dunton and Rezaur R. Representing the team at the Dhaka conference were Dr Samreen Islam, Dr Mark Kristiansen and Dr Diego Marin.
In his keynote talk, Mark Kristiansen (UCL Genomics) highlighted how clinical genomics alongside education is transforming healthcare worldwide, with genomic information playing an increasingly important role in disease diagnosis, risk assessment, treatment planning and patient management.
Another keynote from Diego Marin (Rutgers University) showcased how precision medicine, molecular diagnostics and predictive genomics in reproductive health are making healthcare more personalised and effective by improving disease detection and treatment strategies.
Distinguished speakers included Radiant Chairman Naser Shahriar Zahedi, Chief Guest Professor M. A. Hai, an eminent cancer specialist; and Lieutenant General (Retd.) Sinha Ibn Jamali. Lieutenant General Jamali highlighted advancing diagnostic and treatment technologies and expressed hope that the Bangladesh Genomics Consortium would make a meaningful contribution to the country’s healthcare sector.”
