Olubukola Ayodele: Turning Awareness Into Action

Olubukola Ayodele, Breast Cancer Lead at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, shared on LinkedIn:

“Early detection saved my patient’s life but too many women from Black and Asian communities don’t get that chance.

I’m honoured to be joining my patient, Adeola Obadan, on Rangoli Radio’s Chai ‘n’ Chat this Sunday, 14th September at 4pm BST hosted by the wonderful Rajal Naik.

Together, we will share her deeply personal journey through breast cancer, a journey that could have ended very differently if not for early detection and timely care. Her story is a powerful reminder that checking your breasts regularly can save your life.

As a Breast Oncologist, I see daily the impact of late diagnosis. Sadly, we know that Black and Asian women often face additional barriers such as cultural stigma, lack of awareness, mistrust, and inequalities in access to care. These barriers mean too many women are diagnosed late, when treatment is more complex and outcomes are poorer.

My goal, through conversations like this, is not just to raise awareness but to advocate for equity in cancer care. We must ensure that every woman, regardless of her background, has the knowledge, confidence, and access to detect breast cancer early. This is why I continue to work with communities, healthcare organisations, and policymakers to build culturally competent and inclusive cancer services.

As we approach Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, I hope this programme sparks conversations in homes, faith groups, and communities that need it most.

Awareness is only the first step, what matters is turning awareness into action.

You can listen live here.”
