Aswin Deepak: Multidisciplinary Insights from ESO’s Oncology Diagnostics Course

Aswin Deepak, Medical Student at Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I’m truly grateful to have been selected and to have participated in the European School of Oncology (ESO) offline course, “Oncology Diagnostics: From Molecule to Patient,” held today at the Kyiv City Clinical Oncology Center, Ukraine.

This unique one-day program brought together some of the most brilliant minds in oncology, radiology, endoscopy, and pathology from across Europe and beyond. Designed to strengthen the multidisciplinary approach to cancer diagnostics, the sessions explored how molecular biology, imaging, and histopathology integrate to form the foundation of precision oncology.

Throughout the day, we delved into critical topics such as radiological evaluation of complex tumors, endoscopic detection and biopsy interpretation, and molecular and histopathological correlation in cancer diagnosis. Each presentation seamlessly connected scientific advancements with practical clinical applications – showing how diagnostic accuracy directly impacts therapeutic outcomes.

What truly stood out were the interactive clinical case discussions and live multidisciplinary panels. Experts collaboratively analyzed real-world patient cases, demonstrating how nuanced decision-making in imaging, pathology, and oncology determines the next steps in treatment. It was a powerful reminder of how collaboration between specialties is at the heart of effective, patient-centered care.

It was an honor to meet and engage with Dr. Olena Postupalenko, ESO Ambassador in Ukraine and Onco-Gynaecologist at the Kyiv City Clinical Oncology Centre, and Dr. Nataliia Verovkina, ESO Ambassador and Visiting Research Scholar at Brown University, USA. Their insights into diagnostic innovation, international collaboration, and the resilience of Ukrainian healthcare professionals were truly inspiring.

The event also featured contributions from leading experts across Europe and the USA, including oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists who shared their expertise on evolving diagnostic standards, molecular testing, and multidisciplinary tumor board dynamics.

Programs like these reaffirm how dynamic and evolving the field of oncology truly is – constantly bridging the gap “from molecule to patient.”

Grateful to the European School of Oncology for organizing this enriching experience, and sincerely thankful to my university, Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University official for their continued encouragement and flexibility that allow young doctors like me to learn beyond the classroom.”
