Scott Weintraub, Senior Vice President, United States Business, Alexion, AstraZeneca Rare Disease at Alexion Pharmaceuticals, added:

“I’ve called Massachusetts home for 16 years, so it is especially meaningful to see AstraZeneca’s new strategic R&D center open in Kendall Square.

The new center builds on Alexion’s established presence at 100 Binney Street, further connecting our rare disease expertise with world-class science, technology and talent across AstraZeneca.

For people living with rare diseases, progress cannot come quickly enough.

By bringing teams and capabilities closer together, we can deepen collaboration, accelerate innovation and translate scientific advances into meaningful new possibilities for patients and families.

I’m proud to be part of this local community and excited by what this expanded footprint can make possible for rare disease innovation in the years ahead.”

Rick R. Suárez, US President and SVP US BioPharmaceuticals Business Unit at AstraZeneca, also commented:

“There’s a reason AstraZeneca is investing so heavily in the US: it is one of the most important places in the world for life sciences innovation.

Today, we opened our new R&D center in Kendall Square, Cambridge, bringing together more than 1,800 colleagues in the heart of one of the world’s leading scientific communities.

The United States brings together outstanding universities, brilliant scientists, ambitious entrepreneurs and capital at a scale that is difficult to replicate anywhere else.

Kendall Square is a great example of what happens when all of those things come together around science and the opportunity to improve patients’ lives.

This opening is part of our $50 billion commitment to US R&D and manufacturing by 2030.

It is a significant investment that reflects our confidence in the science, talent and innovation happening here.

I’m proud of the teams who made today possible and excited about what our scientists and partners will discover here.

Ultimately, that is what matters: translating great science into medicines that can change the lives of patients in the US and around the world.”
