Asmaa Elhussiney, Oncology Clinical Pharmacist and Member of the Awareness Team at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Egypt, shared recent initiatives aimed at patient support and community education, developed by the volunteer Awareness Team at the National Cancer Institute, Egypt:
“A personal hygiene awareness day was held for children in the pediatric daycare unit at the National Cancer Institute. The activity focused on teaching basic hygiene habits, with the distribution of coloring booklets, hand sanitizers, toothbrushes, and toothpaste to encourage healthy daily practices among young patients.”

“A hair-loss awareness session was conducted for male and female patients in the adult daycare unit as part of the activities of the Awareness Team at the National Cancer Institute. The session focused on chemotherapy-related hair loss, offering guidance on how to manage this side effect, along with practical coping strategies, essential precautions, and self-care measures to support patients during their treatment journey.”

“An oral care awareness event was conducted as part of the activities of the Awareness Team at the National Cancer Institute, focusing on the importance of proper oral hygiene and the prevention and management of oral mucositis, one of the most common chemotherapy-related side effects. The session provided practical guidance on daily oral care routines, and mouthwash, toothpaste, and toothbrushes were distributed to support patients in maintaining healthy oral practices throughout treatment.”

“A hand and foot syndrome awareness event was conducted as part of the activities of the Awareness Team at the National Cancer Institute. The session highlighted this common chemotherapy-related side effect, explaining its symptoms, preventive measures, and management strategies. Emollients were distributed to patients to support skin care and help reduce discomfort associated with the condition.”
