Joe W. Ramos: Dr. Ashraf Ibrahim, the Frank J. DeSantis Honoree for 2025

Joe W. Ramos, President and CEO at The Lundquist Institute for Biomedical Innovation at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“The Frank J. DeSantis honoree for 2025 is Dr. Ashraf Ibrahim, who was recognized for his outstanding work at TLI’s October Legends event. Today, he presented the formal DeSantis Lecture, which was a tour de force!

Dr. Ibrahim is the very embodiment of what this award celebrates. He is an outstanding scientist, mentor, and leader whose pioneering research in infectious diseases has transformed our understanding of fungal pathogenesis and created new immunotherapies to treat the infections they cause.

He continues to lead groundbreaking studies to improve our ability to fight fungal infections that are on the rise around the world. His research is accelerating vaccine and antibiotic development against multidrug-resistant microorganisms and has formed the foundation of several companies to get these to the people who desperately need them.

His impact is seen in his more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and has been supported by close to $100 million in research funding. His impact extends far beyond our campus. Dr. Ibrahim was recently awarded the prestigious 2024 Kuwait Prize in Biological Sciences, recognizing his pioneering work in translational medicine and the development of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for complex diseases. His company, Vitalex Biosciences, this year also received an up to $40M NIH competitive contract for Strategic Advancement of Second-Generation Fungal Vaccine Through Phase 1 Trials.

He is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, a former member of The Lundquist Institute for Biomedical Innovation at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center Board of Directors, a dedicated mentor, and a visionary entrepreneur. He continues to push the boundaries of translational science while inspiring the next generation of investigators.

Join me in congratulating him!

Another way Lundquist Leads!”
