Arif Kamal: Addressing Access to Care with Hope Lodge on the West Coast

Arif Kamal, Chief Patient Officer of American Cancer Society and President of American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“An exciting day for people with cancer and their caregivers who visit Northern California for treatment.

With great leaders and colleagues at Stanford Health Care including Timothy Seay-Morrison, David Entwistle, and Niraj Sehgal and tremendous cross-ACS work done by my friends Maria Olson and others, together we are announcing a bright future to accelerate access to cutting-edge care by giving people one less thing to worry about – how to afford a place to stay during treatment.

The Hope Lodge program at American Cancer Society has been improving survival for people with cancer for over 55 years, exemplifying the axiom that ‘you can’t get better, if you can’t get to care.’

Last year alone, we provided other 560,000 free nights of lodging, avoiding over $85 million in out-of-pocket hotel costs that patients would otherwise be burdened in paying.

While 31 Hope Lodges across the country is a tremendous number, we haven’t ever had one on the West Coast. We’re changing that.

Truly, a great day to celebrate.”
