Arif Kamal, Chief Patient Officer of American Cancer Society and President of American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“It’s a special day when we get to meet one of our ACS Global partners in person!
Phoebe Ongadi, Chief Executive Officer at the Kenyan Network of Cancer Organizations, and I had a chance to catch up at the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) Leadership Summit and Lobby Day earlier this year.
KENCO NETWORK has been a valuable partner to ACS Global since 2015. Under the banner, United Against Cancer, KENCO is the leading network of cancer-focused organizations in Kenya – growing from 10 to 72 organizational members in the past 11 years.
By providing operational support and investing in long-term organizational capacity, the American Cancer Society works with KENCO to build a strong civil society response to the growing burden of cancer in Kenya, where the disease is the third leading cause of death.
Programmatic work our Global team supports includes cervical cancer elimination, patient navigation adoption, patient and caregiver education, and Global Relay For Life – KENCO is hosting their first Relay event in 2026!
So great to spend time with Phoebe in D.C. where we learned ways to further strengthen our collective work to end cancer in Kenya.”
Anu Agrawal, Vice President of Global Cancer Support at American Cancer Society, shared this post, adding:
“The ‘special sauce; in our global work is our partners – and fostering these partnerships beyond a single grant and rather with sustained technical support over many years. This has taken many forms for the ACS global team over the decades, from ACS University to organizational strengthening and now the ACS Global Academy.
The power of national cancer organizations is unquestioned – we continue to foster these relationships to impact care for persons with cancer at the national, regional, and global levels. Going forward, we continue to ideate around optimizing technology to foster these interconnected relationships.”
