“The ARIA Guide is a clinical resource developed to address disparities in childhood cancer care across diverse healthcare environments. Through partnership between St. Jude Global, SIOP and several international organizations, ARIA provides resource-adapted, evidence-based guidelines and practical tools for clinicians around the world.
Speaking at the International Society of Paediatric Oncology Annual Congress is Amsterdam this week, Nickhill Bhakta, MD, Director of the Sub-Saharan African regional program and co-director of the ARIA Guide program, has underscored the need for treatment plans that reflect the realities of local resources. In many low- and middle-income countries, survival rates for childhood cancer remain significantly lower than in high-income countries. The ARIA Guide aims to close this gap by offering context-specific recommendations, accessible on virtually any internet-connected device, and usable even when connectivity is interrupted.
Collaboration with SIOP has been central to ARIA’s development and dissemination. By leveraging SIOP’s global network and educational expertise, St. Jude and its partners have engaged nearly 700 healthcare providers from over 80 countries in the process of creating and refining these guidelines. This shared effort ensures that clinicians everywhere have access to the information needed to deliver safe and effective care.
‘If we did this only as St. Jude, we may reach 50% of the world. The moment we live in requires everybody to be on board,’ said Bhakta. ‘SIOP is the key partner to create the legitimacy and to disseminate those guidelines. Coming together, that is how we can make sure we reach every healthcare provider who needs access to treatment, regardless of where they are working.’
The ARIA Guide also includes recommendations for supportive, palliative and survivorship care, addressing the comprehensive needs of children with cancer. By expanding access to high-quality resources, ARIA supports the mission to improve outcomes for children worldwide.
