Aren Mnatzakanian Shares Insightful Essay on Life After Stroke in Writers Read Collection

Aren Mnatzakanian, Researcher, Breast Imaging Research Consortium at Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I’ve always loved popular medical writing-the kind that captures the human stories behind the science.

During medical school, I began documenting some of my most formative patient encounters through a series of short, anonymized essays focused on the human side of healthcare that often gets lost in the pace of training.

I’m excited to share that one of those essays, ‘Paul’s Story,’ has just been published in the Writers Read anthology Body Language: True Stories of Illness, Recovery and Discovery.

The essay recounts my time with Paul, a man recovering from a right parietal stroke that left him with hemispatial neglect. What began as a routine neurological exam quickly became something much more meaningful-conversations about loss, resilience, and rebuilding life after sudden illness.

Paul reminded me that behind every neurological deficit is a person with memories, fears, and hopes-and that sometimes the most important thing we can offer patients is simply our time and attention.

I’m grateful to have contributed to a collection that highlights the lived experiences of illness and recovery, and to the patients who unknowingly become some of our greatest teachers.

If you’re interested in reading the book, you can find it here.

As I begin my journey as a PGY-1 Diagnostic Radiology resident, I hope to carry these lessons forward-remembering that behind every scan is a human story waiting to be understood.”
