Anushka Patel: A Rare Window to Act on Chronic Disease
Anushka Patel, Chief Executive Officer at The George Institute for Global Health, shared on LinkedIn:
“A rare window to act on chronic disease
Later this year, world leaders will gather in New York for the UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs and Mental Health. These moments don’t come often – it has been seven years since governments last had the chance to put non-communicable diseases firmly on the global agenda.
Chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and mental health conditions already account for nearly three-quarters of deaths worldwide. Behind every number is a person, a family, and a community carrying the weight of illness that is largely preventable.
That’s why I am so encouraged to see more than 40 organisations and individuals join together in a united Call to Action, urging the Australian Government to show leadership – at home, across our region, and on the global stage.
As I’ve said before, these conditions are the leading cause of death and disability in Australia and worldwide, yet progress has been far too slow. We know what works, and we must act now.
This call is clear:
- Strengthen our response nationally
- Invest in healthier systems for our region
- Demonstrate global leadership
The time to act is now. Australia has the opportunity – and responsibility – to lead.
I invite colleagues and partners to read and share the Call to Action, and to add your own voice of support. Together, we can build the momentum needed to make this rare window for change count.
- Call to Action.
