“Antidepressants Show Potential to Fight Cancer.

A study published in Cell Press reveals that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), commonly prescribed for depression, can enhance T cells’ ability to combat tumors and suppress cancer growth across various types.

Key Findings:
  • SSRIs like fluoxetine and citalopram reduced tumor size by over 50% in mouse models of melanoma, breast, prostate, colon, and bladder cancers.
  • Patients with low serotonin transporter (SERT) levels exhibited improved survival rates compared to those with higher levels.
  • Combining SSRIs with immune checkpoint inhibitors led to complete remission in some cases.

This research, led by Dr. Lili Yang at UCLA Health Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, suggests that repurposing SSRIs could offer a safer, more effective approach to cancer treatment.
