Anna Mary Nyakabau: Growing Cancer Challenge in Zimbabwe and Ongoing National Response

Anna Mary Nyakabau, Director and Lead Oncologist at Mary Ann Oncology, Founder and Board Chairperson at Cancerserve Trust Zimbabwe, Board Chairperson at Radiation Protection Authority of Zimbabwe shared a post on LinkedIn:

“The cancer burden is increasing at unprecedented rates! Globally, approximately 20 million new cases and 10 million deaths (WHO, 2022). In my country Zimbabwe over 8000 new cases and over 3000 deaths per annum (Zimbabwe National Cancer registry).

Parirenyatwa is the largest tertiary hospital taking care of Cancer patients. Unfortunately, the majority present at an advanced stage. Myths and misconceptions contribute to the delays. National Cancer Control Plan (2025-2030) was launched last year.
As the country reorganizes and work on implementing the plan, the unpredictable burden manifests at the public hospitals and there is need for multi sectoral collaboration to mitigate the impact of such.

Cancerserve.org identified this need and helps identify stakeholders to meet the immediate needs through mitigating identified gaps.
The authorities are working tirelessly and together we can get further.
Recently (10/04/2026), they held a belated International Women’s Day commemoration of the female workers( majority of health industry workers).
It was heartening and I was honored to be part of this, representing Cancerserve.”
