Angela Mastronuzzi: Experiencing Firsthand the Treatments We Give to Children

Angela Mastronuzzi, Head of Neuro-Oncology Unit at Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital and President of AIEOP, shared a post on LinkedIn:

Press: “The Story of a Pediatric Oncologist at Bambino Gesù: I’ve Experienced Firsthand the Treatments We Give to Children”

I’m grateful to Famiglia Cristiana for giving me the space to share my personal journey. Talking about my experience as both a pediatric oncologist and a patient was important and empowering, and it reminded me why we do what we do every day: caring for the whole patient, not just the disease.

In the article, they highlighted how my own diagnosis led me to rethink nutrition (including a vegetarian diet), lifestyle, and holistic support in pediatric oncology, and how these lessons influence my work today.

“I’ve experienced firsthand the treatments we give to children, the experience of having an illness did not take away my desire to live; on the contrary, it taught me not to give up on my dreams and professional goals.”

I hope that by sharing my story, we can raise awareness of the importance of comprehensive care – not only oncological treatments, but also medical nutrition as an integral part of the care pathway, as well as the physical and emotional wellbeing of our patients.

Now, when I meet my patients, I do so not only as their physician but also as someone who is experiencing life as a patient myself.
I understand their fears, their vulnerabilities, and their resilience in a way that allows me to connect with them more deeply than ever.”
