Andrea Stephany Diaz, Co-Founder and CEO of OncoSwab. shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I was at a dinner recently and someone said,
“Well, smoking rates are declining. So lung cancer will sort itself out eventually, right?”
Oof. Where do I start.
Yes, smoking rates are down. That’s great news. But 1 in 5 lung cancer patients have never smoked a day in their lives. Never-smoker lung cancer is actually one of the fastest growing segments, and we still don’t fully understand why.
And here’s the part people forget: the damage from decades of smoking doesn’t just disappear. The people who smoked in the 70s, 80s, 90s – they’re the ones getting diagnosed now. We’re living through the long tail of a public health crisis that started 50 years ago.
Lung cancer isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. The question is whether we’ll have better tools to catch it early.
And that’s why we’re building OncoSwab.”
