Amy C. Moore, Director of Patient Engagement and Advocacy at Summit Therapeutics, Inc., shared a post on LinkedIn:
“ASCO 2026 is not only about the big, headline making moments. It is also about the small moments of personal connection.
My Uber driver and I had a great conversation on my way to an event this evening. When he heard I was here for a cancer conference, he started asking questions because he saw me as trustworthy. As a Black man, he talked about his own distrust of doctors. He highlighted the importance of compassion as a way of building trust.
We covered a lot of ground, including whether there would ever be a ‘cure’ for cancer. I told him about the groundbreaking progress that we heard today for patients with pancreatic cancer. He seemed excited to know that science is advancing.
He asked how long cancer has been around. I told him it is essentially a condition of being human but we can go back to ancient Egypt and see evidence of cancer. Hearing me explain things, he was willing to set aside his long held belief that cancer was man-made to generate profits.
He told me about his diabetes and how he is wearing a glucose monitor and tracking his blood sugar with an app. He has a 2 yo daughter and wants to be around to see her grow up.
It’s about listening and meeting people where they are that we can sometimes make the biggest difference.”
