Nazik Hammad, Medical Oncologist and Professor at St. Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Again two historic announcements at AMSA (Association of medical schools in Africa) conference in Lagos Nigeria.
1. It was announced that my friend, peer-mentor and collaborator, Prof Emiola Oluwabunmi Olapade-Olaopa is now the President – Elect of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). WFME was established in 1972 by the World Medical Association (WMA) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
It sets global standards for medical education, and works on the promotion of accreditation through the WFME Recognition of Accreditation.
Those of us who on accreditation are familiar with the 2023 PGME standards. It is incredibly good news that the president elect is a prominent Africa educator and a previous president of AMSA. African medical schools have worked hard to fulfill their societal mission while grappling with adverse economic and sociopolitical realities.
African medical schools are great producers and exporters of highly qualified physicians to high-income countries with no reparations or compensations. Things are changing and will change
2. Prof Bernice Adegbehingbe has been elected as president of AMSA , an accomplished educator and ophthalmologist, the first female AMSA president has an ambitious program to improve the quality of medical education and improve retention of the workforce.
Congratulations to both and looking forward to an exciting era of medical education in Africa.”
