Amit Gupta, Soroosh Mahboubi Global Radiology Scholar at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Social Media Editor at European Radiology, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Turning a research idea into a clinical trial is much harder and much more rewarding than it looks on paper.
Over the past week, I had the privilege of participating in the Society of Interventional Oncology Clinical Trials Methodology Workshop at the University of Pennsylvania.
The workshop covered the full architecture of clinical trial development: refining the clinical question, choosing meaningful endpoints, selecting an appropriate trial design, defining eligibility criteria, planning sample size and statistical analysis, anticipating regulatory and operational barriers, and translating a promising idea into a protocol that can actually be conducted.
What made the experience especially valuable was not just learning about trial design and protocol development. It was the opportunity to have a real study idea challenged, refined, and strengthened by outstanding faculty mentors and fellow scholars.
A special highlight was learning from the legend himself: Michael Soulen whose clarity, rigor, and deep experience in clinical trial design were truly inspiring.
One of my biggest takeaways was that a successful clinical trial is often built not by asking a bigger question, but by asking a clearer one.
Grateful to the SIO faculty, mentors, organizers, and fellow participants for creating such a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment. I leave with a much deeper appreciation for clinical trial design and renewed enthusiasm for investigator-led research.
Special thanks to Hannah Muerhoff for all the support and excellent organisation!
This was such an incredible trial workshop!
Stay tuned for the future editions, highly recommended!”
