“New in Cancer

Research led by Ifeoma Nwigwe-Obiora, MPH of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health suggests that poverty in surrounding counties has a greater impact on mortality among women with breast cancer than residential county poverty alone.

In this retrospective cohort study of 36,711 women diagnosed with primary breast cancer between 2005-2014 and who survived at least 1 year, those surrounded by high-poverty counties had a 22% increase in death compared to those in low-poverty surrounding counties.

Incorporating poverty levels from both residential and surrounding counties may improve definitions of high- and low-risk regions after a breast cancer diagnosis.”
