New Evidence Reframes Psychosocial Factors in Cancer Risk – American Cancer Society Journals

American Cancer Society Journals shared a post on LinkedIn:

“New research in cancer, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, examines a long-standing question in cancer research: do psychosocial factors influence cancer risk?

Drawing on data from the international PSY-CA consortium, spanning multiple large cohort studies, investigators found no strong evidence of a link between psychosocial factors-including depression, anxiety, social support, and distress-and the risk of developing cancer.

PSY-CA has spent the last years researching a commonly held belief-that poor mental health or other potential psychosocial stressors can increase the risk of developing cancer. Our findings do not support this notion,

– said lead author Lonneke van Tuijl, PhD, of UMCG, in the Netherlands.

These findings may help address persistent misconceptions around mental health and cancer, while reinforcing the importance of established risk factors in cancer prevention.”
