“A brain cancer survivor. 150 marathons.
One unexpected MRI that changed everything.
I recently joined Newsmax Media, Inc. for Cancer Survivor Month alongside Hank Donigan, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran whose brain tumor was discovered during a research MRI despite having no symptoms.
Today, he has completed more than 150 marathons since his surgery.
Stories like Hank’s are a reminder of how much cancer care has changed.
A recent American Cancer Society analysis found that roughly 7 in 10 cancer patients now survive at least five years after diagnosis. While we still have a long way to go, that represents extraordinary progress.
Advances in surgery, radiation therapy, systemic therapy, targeted treatments, and immunotherapy are helping patients live longer and live better.
One of the most exciting developments has been immunotherapy, which uses the body’s own immune system to recognize and fight cancer. For some patients, treatments that would have seemed impossible a decade ago are now routine parts of care.
As physicians, we often focus on the science.
Patients remind us why the science matters.
Thank you to Hank for sharing his story and inspiring so many others facing their own cancer journeys.”
