All-Island Cancer Research Institute (AICRI) shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Over 760 people in Ireland are diagnosed with head and neck cancers each year, yet this cancer type remains underrepresented in research. University College Dublin hosted a Head and Neck Cancer Symposium, bringing scientists, clinicians and patients together to call for stronger focus on early diagnosis, personalised treatment and patient involvement.
Dr. Arman Rahman, assistant professor at UCD and symposium’s host, highlighted the need to build an ecosystem that integrates research, clinical care and patient voice from the outset. Prof. William Gallagher, professor of cancer biology and co-lead of the All-Island Cancer Research Institute (AICRI) emphasised the importance and the renewed focus highlighted by the partnership between Precision Oncology Ireland and Irish Cancer Society on this type of cancer.
Guest speaker Richard Boyd Barrett shared his own cancer journey, raising important research questions and urging anyone with concerning symptoms, particularly men, to seek medical advice promptly.
This was followed by insights from ENT consultant Fergal O’Duffy, along with strong contributions from Northern Ireland where Jacqueline James, Stephanie G. Craig and Laura Graham outlined ongoing research and PPI activity in NI. The session concluded with insights from Eleanor O’Sullivan, chair of the Patient Support Group IHNS.
In partnership with Precision Oncology Ireland, Irish Cancer Society, AICRIstart, All-Island Cancer Alliances, PPI Ignite Network and Research Ireland North South Research Programme.”
