Alique Topalian: Presented at the International Cancer Education Conference ICEC2025

Alique Topalian, Research Scientist- Survivorship and Supportive Services at the University of Cincinnati Cancer Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Today, my mentor, Melinda Butsch Kovacic, and I presented at the International Cancer Education Conference ICEC2025 at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Our session titled ‘Undergraduate Cancer Research Scholars’ Community Outreach to Encourage Community Engagement and Curb Future Disparities in the Cancer Workforce‘ focused on the work of our R25 Grant. With an overarching goal of growing the future cancer workforce, the University of Cincinnati Cancer Center established Cincinnati’s first-ever cancer-focused undergraduate summer fellowship program called the Cancer Research Scholars Program (CRSP).

Over the next decade, cancer cases are expected to grow to over 23 million. Shortages in the cancer research and treatment workforce slow the initiation of, and recruitment to, clinical trials, delay the development of new treatments, and limit access to care, particularly in rural areas. Proposed solutions to the cancer workforce shortages include the need for more effective communication and collaboration within and between disciplines across the cancer control continuum.

CRSP has been one of my favorite projects over the last three years. I have had such incredible undergraduate mentees and love helping to train the next generation of cancer researchers!”
