Alina Comanescu, Vice Chair of the Board at Digestive Cancers Europe, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“From February 1, 2026, the first day of sick leave will no longer be paid.
For people undergoing cancer treatment, this change means dozens of unpaid days per year, just to be able to go for investigations, treatments, check-ups or essential procedures.
Cancer patients do not miss work out of convenience. They are absent to continue their treatment. They are missing so that they can live.
That is why we have launched a petition requesting:
- exemption of cancer patients from this measure
- the introduction of a distinct code, different from the ‘usual disease’, reflecting the reality of oncological treatments
Sign and share.
We are over 34 patient associations that have launched a public appeal asking for the elimination of the provision on the non-payment of the first day of sick leave for people with serious illnesses.”
