Alina Comanescu: European Beating Cancer Plan is Not Just a Policy…

Alina Comanescu, Vice Chair of the Board of Digestive Cancers Europe, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Last week, I had the honor of moderating the panel ‘Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan: Strategies and Implementation‘ – an essential dialogue about how Europe can transform the way we prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer.

The European Beating Cancer Plan is not just a policy; it is a vision for equity, innovation, and shared responsibility – a roadmap toward a continent where access to care is not defined by geography or income, but by commitment and collaboration.
Our discussion brought together extraordinary experts who each embody this vision in their work:

  • Flaviana Rotaru highlighted the importance of regional cooperation and innovation ecosystems in accelerating the adoption of the European Cancer Plan.
  • Antonella Cardone, amplifying the voice of European patients and calling for true equity in access to care.
  • Mihaela Gherghiceanu emphasized the need for evidence-based policy and scientific excellence.
  • Florina Bojin discussed the next generation of researchers and medical leaders.
  • Juan-Jose Ventura presented good practice example of European cooperation and patient advocacy to bridge research and real-world impact.

Together, we explored how to:

  • Integrate the European Cancer Plan into national strategies;
  • Accelerate innovation in prevention and care;
  • Strengthen cooperation through shared data and cross-border collaboration;
  • Keep the patient voice at the center of every policy decision.

Three takeaways stood out:

  • Integration is key – The European Plan is only as strong as its local implementation.
  • Innovation is essential – Data, AI, and new prevention tools will define the next decade of cancer control.
  • Equity is non-negotiable – Every person, in every country, deserves the same chance at survival.

Cancer remains one of the greatest asymmetrical threats to our health systems – but also one of the greatest opportunities to prove what collaboration across Europe can achieve.

Thank you to the BeHEALTH 2025 team and to all who believe that by working together – patients, researchers, policymakers, and advocates – we can make cancer a story of hope and survival.”
