Alim Emre Basaran, Neurosurgery Resident at Leipzig University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Tumor volume, proliferation index and seizures. These are usually read as separate clinical signals.
What if a single routine blood test is linked to all of them? A study from our neuro-oncology research group (Johannes Wach, Erdem Güresir) observed that preoperative serum LDH is associated with the presence and extent of peritumoral brain edema in melanoma brain metastases, and correlates with tumor volume, proliferation index (MIB-1), and preoperative seizures.
Edema burden is a major driver of neurological morbidity and shapes decisions on corticosteroid use and surgical urgency, but it’s typically only apparent on preoperative MRI. A simple lab value that tracks with it could support earlier risk stratification, before imaging is even reviewed
Thanks to our collaborators Wolf Müller, Max Braune, Barrantes-Freer Alonso, Prof.Dr. Mirjana Ziemer and Prof. Dr.Jan Simon.”
