“Thrilled to present our research at the Global Oncology Conference in Toronto alongside my colleague Kian Pourbakhtiari! A huge thank you to the University Health Network, the University of Toronto, and the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre for hosting such an insightful event.
The Lancet Oncology Commission reports that 80% of new cancer cases require surgery and estimates that by 2030, 17.3 million patients worldwide will need surgical procedures for diagnosis, treatment, or palliation. However, fewer than 25% of these patients are expected to have access to safe, affordable, and timely options.
Our poster, “Cancer Control Planning in Southeast Asia: A Comparative Content Analysis of Surgical Oncology and Systemic Therapy Integration”, explores how health systems are planning for this demand.
Despite the clinical reality that most cancer patients require surgery, our findings show that national policies across the ASEAN region remain disproportionately focused on systemic therapies. By integrating parallel surgical oncology planning into future National Cancer Control Plans, governments can ensure more comprehensive and equitable cancer treatment.”
