Alejandro Gil-Salmerón: Presenting Work at ICIC26 on Integrated Cancer Care for People With Mental Ill-Health

Alejandro Gil-Salmerón, Senior Researcher at International Foundation for Integrated Care, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I had the opportunity to present work from the co-captain project at ICIC26 in Birmingham, focusing on integrated cancer care for people with lived experience of mental ill-health.

Our sessions explored how fragmented systems, stigma, and inequities continue to shape cancer outcomes, and how integrated, person-centred approaches can begin to address these challenges.

Across two presentations, we shared:

  • Qualitative evidence on the patient navigation for cancer prevention for people with mental ill health
  • Evidence from a systematic review highlighting promising models such as navigation and collaborative care
  • A consensus-driven framework defining practical standards for integrating cancer and mental health services
  • A strong focus on implementation—moving from principles to real-world transformation

What stood out most was the engagement from the audience.

We received thoughtful, challenging questions that pushed us to reflect more deeply on:

  • The real-world complexity of implementing integrated care
  • The importance of cross-sector collaboration
  • How we ensure sustainability and equity in practice

These discussions reinforced just how critical and timely this work is. They also highlighted shared challenges across systems, and a collective willingness to move toward more integrated, inclusive care pathways.

Grateful for the conversations, reflections, and energy in the room. This is exactly what partnership in care looks like.”
