“I am truly excited and proud to see the publication of the ‘SIOP Standards Framework for Pediatric Oncology Units in Low- and Middle-Income Countries’ in Wiley Online Library.
It was an honour to contribute to this important work alongside so many colleagues and experts whom I deeply admire.
While standards for pediatric oncology units have been established in high-income countries, they are not always applicable or achievable in low- and middle-income settings. This framework offers practical, scalable, implementable, and evidence-informed standards designed specifically for these realities.
By addressing essential areas such as infrastructure, clinical care, medication safety, research, and multidisciplinary coordination, this work aims to reduce variations in care and support more equitable outcomes for children with cancer worldwide.
Importantly, the framework also contributes to the goal of the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer: achieving at least 60% survival for children with cancer globally by 2030.
I am especially grateful that the voices and experiences of patients and families were included in this process. Developing strong standards is not only about improving clinical systems—it is about ensuring that every child, regardless of where they are born, has access to safe, high-quality, compassionate, and equitable cancer care.”
