“I am very happy to share that our letter ‘End of Oncology Alert: New Challenges’ was published in La Tercera.
The end of the cancer health alert in Chile marks an important step forward in reducing waiting lists. But it also reminds us that cancer care can’t end when treatment ends.
Surviving must also mean being able to rebuild one’s life, project oneself and make decisions about one’s own future.
One of the least visible effects of cancer treatments is the damage they can cause to reproductive capacity. In Chile, fertility preservation is not yet guaranteed by the public system, leaving this possibility out of reach for many young people diagnosed with cancer.
Together with medical specialists, foundations, and legislators, we are promoting a proposal to guarantee timely and equitable access to these procedures, either through their incorporation into the GES basket or through other effective ways of financing and implementation.

Fertility preservation must be part of comprehensive, dignified cancer care focused on quality of life.
