Alejandra Mendez: Why Collaboration is Vital for Childhood Cancer Care – SIOP 2026

Alejandra Mendez, Vice President of Childhood Cancer International, recognized among 100 Influential Women in Oncology in 2025 by OncoDaily, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“This week, I have had the deep honor of participating in the SIOP AFRICA Congress in the vibrant and fascinating city of Lagos, Nigeria. It has been a truly special experience – one filled with learning, inspiration, and the joy of connecting with new African friends who are doing extraordinary work for children with cancer.

What makes these spaces so powerful is that they bring together everyone who is part of the childhood cancer community: doctors, researchers, advocates, NGO representatives, family members, survivors, and people with lived experience. Each voice matters. Each perspective enriches the conversation. And together, we are reminded that none of us can do this work alone.

The most important lesson I am taking with me is this: collaboration is what saves lives. Only by working together – across disciplines, sectors, and borders – can we continue building a better future for children with cancer and their families.

It was also a true privilege to take part in the Childhood Cancer InternationalAfrica workshop and to meet the member organizations of CCI across this extraordinary continent. My heart is full of gratitude, admiration, and hope.

Thank you to everyone who made this possible, especially to The Dorcas Cancer Foundation for their generous support. I am looking forward to the days ahead, to new learning, and to continuing to build bridges with so many wonderful people committed to this cause.”
