Alejandra Mendez, Vice President of Childhood Cancer International and one of the 100 Influential Women in Oncology in 2025 by OncoDaily, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I am deeply grateful to Revista del Sábado, El Mercurio for giving visibility to the experience of childhood cancer within families, and for portraying this harsh reality with such care and sensitivity. By doing so, they help raise awareness of a reality that millions of families around the world live every day.
Sharing my personal experience with childhood cancer was not easy. This is an intensely painful journey, and one that should never be romanticized. Cancer is a brutal experience for any family. Still, I hope that these words resonate with other families who have lived — or are living — a story similar to mine, and that they feel a little less alone.
With time, many of us can say that cancer changed our lives, taught us profound lessons, and perhaps even made us better people. But the truth is, no one would ever choose this path for personal growth. We would all gladly give up any so-called ‘personal transformation’ if it meant sparing our children from such suffering.
My sincere thanks to journalist Rita Cox for her sensitivity, gentleness, and genuine care in telling my story.”
