Aleix Prat: 24 Hours of Science, Collaboration and Friendship in Poland

Aleix Prat, Director of Clínic Barcelona Comprehensive Cancer Center (4CB), Professor at the University of Barcelona, Co‑Founder and President of Reveal Genomics, Director of the Breast Cancer Program (IOB‑Pangaea), and Chair of the Advisory Board at Ona Therapeutics., shared posts on LinkedIn:

“Yesterday I had the privilege of visiting the Maria Sklodowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology in Gliwice, Poland.

It was a pleasure to spend time with Prof. Sławomir Blamek, Director of the Institute, together with Prof. Michał Jarząbąb and Dr. Marcin Kubeczko.

Marcin and I first met through the ESMO – European Society for Medical Oncology Fellowship Mentor Program. What started as a mentoring relationship has evolved into a productive scientific collaboration and a valued friendship. Over the past 2 years, our teams have worked together successfully in the field of breast cancer research.

I was also particularly impressed by the Nuclear Medicine Department and the Theragnostics Unit, which reflect how innovation, advanced technology, and multidisciplinary collaboration can be integrated to improve cancer care.

Visits like this remind me that some of the best ideas in cancer research emerge when mentorship, collaboration, and a shared commitment to patients come together across institutions and countries.

Thank you, Sławomir, Michał, and Marcin for your warm hospitality and the inspiring discussions, and everyone involved during the visit. I look forward to continuing our collaboration between both cancer centers.

Investing in young talent and building international partnerships is one of the most powerful ways to shape the future of oncology.”

“Today I had the privilege of speaking at the IV Śląskie PiersionaliaMeandry raka piersi, Spotkania Ekspertów in Katowice, Poland.

My lecture focused on the evolving role of transcriptomic tests in breast cancer, from luminal disease to HER2+ and triple-negative, and how genomis is helping us move towards more precise and individualized treatment decisions.

Poland has a vibrant and rapidly growing breast oncology community, and it is inspiring to see the strong commitment to innovation, collaboration, and translational research. Meetings like this reinforce the importance of building bridges between institutions and countries to accelerate progress in precision oncology.

I would like to thank the organizers, especially Prof. Michał Jarząb, Prof. Barbara Radecka, and all the colleagues and participants for the warm welcome, the excellent discussions, and the opportunity to share our work.

The future of cancer care will be shaped not only by new therapies, but also by our ability to better understand the biology of each tumor and to work together across borders.”

“24 hours in Poland.

In just one day, I had the opportunity to visit an outstanding cancer center, discuss science with inspiring colleagues, give a lecture, and, most importantly, spend time with my friend Marcin Kubeczko.

We met a few years ago through the ESMO – European Society for Medical Oncology Fellowship Mentor Program. At first, I was his mentor.

Today, I see him as a collaborator and a friend. Together, our teams have built projects in breast cancer and precision oncology, but beyond the science, we have built a relationship based on trust and shared values.

Academic medicine can be demanding, and we often focus on papers, grants, and clinical trials. Trips like this remind me that some of the most meaningful parts of our profession are the people we meet along the way.

Thank you, Marcin, for your friendship, your hospitality, and for making these 24 hours in Poland so memorable. I am looking forward to everything we will continue building together.

Sometimes, the best collaborations start with a conversation and grow into something much bigger.”
