Aleix Prat: Transformative Vision Leads 4CB to OECI Comprehensive Cancer Centre Recognition

Aleix Prat, Director of Clínic Barcelona Comprehensive Cancer Center (4CB), Professor at the University of Barcelona, Co‑Founder and President of Reveal Genomics, Director of the Breast Cancer Program (IOB‑Pangaea), and Chair of the Advisory Board at Ona Therapeutics., shared a post on LinkedIn:

In 2014, we set out to build a truly integrated cancer center within Campus Clínic Barcelona, bringing together patient care, research, education, and innovation under a shared vision.

During the first 8 eight years, we strengthened our Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, and Hematology departments while expanding our Clinical Trials Unit, which became a cornerstone of innovation and early access to new therapies.

After 8 years as Head of the Medical Oncology Department, I became convinced that achieving our vision required a new level of integration. In 2023, we launched the Institute of Cancer and Blood Disorders (ICAMS), bringing oncology and hematology together under a common strategy.

This transformation laid the foundation for the creation of the Clínic Barcelona Comprehensive Cancer Center (4CB) in 2024. While ICAMS was the catalyst, its realization was only possible thanks to the commitment, collaboration, and support of colleagues across Campus Clínic Barcelona who embraced a shared vision of excellence in cancer care, research, education, and innovation.

Today, we celebrate a major milestone: the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI) accreditation of 4CB as a Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

This recognition reflects the work of more than 1,000 professionals who care for 6,500 new patients each year through 15 multidisciplinary functional units, more than 600 active clinical trials, 27 research groups, three transversal programs (hereditary cancer, immunotherapy, and molecular tumor boards), and over 500 scientific publications annually.

What began as a vision has become one of Europe’s leading Comprehensive Cancer Centres.

My deepest gratitude to everyone who has contributed to this journey. I am especially grateful to the members of the 4CB Governing Board and Executive Board, as well as the Clinical Care, Research, and Education Boards, whose commitment, expertise, and shared vision have been instrumental in building 4CB.

I would also like to acknowledge Josep M. Campistol, Susana Puig, Joan Guàrdia Olmos, and Antoni Castells Garangou for their leadership and support throughout this transformation. A special thanks to Dr. Faust Feu, Director of Quality at Hospital Clínic, and to the entire accreditation team, whose extraordinary dedication, professionalism, and perseverance were essential to achieving this milestone.

This achievement belongs to the more than 1,000 professionals who make 4CB possible every day, and to the patients who inspire us to continuously strive for excellence.

The accreditation is not the destination, it is a new starting point. Our North Star remains the future Nou Campus Clínic UBDiagonal , where we will continue building one of Europe’s leading ecosystems for cancer care, research, innovation, and education.”
