Alba Fiorentino: Radiotherapy’s Vital Role and the Growing Workforce Gap

Alba Fiorentino, Full Professor of Radiation Oncology and Head of the Radiation Oncology Residency Program at LUM University of Medicine, Chief of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Department, Chief of Radiation Oncology at MIULLI.art H-index 32, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“The radioterapia can save lives and, also thanks to its use, an increasing number of patients recover or manage to live with the tumore for a long time. Radiotherapy treatment is necessary in more than 60 percent of cancer patients, both for curative and palliative treatments. However, there are different types of radiotherapy, indicated in different types of neoplasms and not.

The possibility of performing radiation treatments for non-oncological diseases, such as aritmie, is emerging as a future prospect for patients who have no therapeutic alternatives.

Despite this wide scope for action, this year out of a total of 141 specialisation contracts tendered, 92 were not awarded, 65%. The shortage of residents will result in a reduction in the supply of life-saving treatment for many patients.

However, we are proud, in our first year of the specialization school of radiation oncology, to have occupied 100% of the places assigned at Università LUM Policlinico Ente Ecclesiastico Ospedale Generale Regionale ‘F. MIULLI’.”
