Ajay Aggarwal: Planning Radiotherapy Can Take Weeks – Our AI Can Reduce That to Over an Hour

Ajay Aggarwal, Clinical Director of the National Cancer Audit Collaborating Centre (NATCAN) and Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, shared UCL Innovative Clinical Trials Unit’s post on LinkedIn, adding:

“Results of the largest prospective AI trial in radiotherapy reported today at ESTRO. The outcomes support a role for AI in bridging global treatment inequalities in access to high quality cancer care particularly for cervix and prostate cancer- see below”

Quoting UCL Innovative Clinical Trials Unit’s post:

“The ARCHERY study demonstrates that its AI radiotherapy planning tool can be a new contributor to the global effort to eliminate cervical cancer.

New results from the ARCHERY study presented today at ESTRO 2026 found that the ARCHERY AI radiotherapy planning is equally effective at supporting the delivery of timely and high-quality radiotherapy for the treatment of cervical cancer as humans. The study’s AI technology was able to plan radiotherapy to the highest international standard in more than 95% of cervical cancer cases.

Ajay Aggarwal, principal investigator of the study, says:

‘In a usual workflow, planning radiotherapy can take many hours over several weeks, as it depends on the availability of specialised staff. Our AI technology can reduce that time to just over an hour. This is important as it has the potential to reduce waiting times and widen access to this life-saving treatment in settings where the burden of cervical cancer is highest.’”
